Halliburton recently unveiled two technologies targeted for complex reservoirs and deepwater assets. The GEM tool for elemental analysis and GeoTap IDS sensor for fluid sampling and identification both promise users more comprehensive formation evaluation to make real-time changes to their drilling operations.

The technologies were unveiled as part of Halliburton’s tour of its North Belt campus in Houston, which houses some of the laboratories and manufacturing facilities where Halliburton scientists and engineers develop and test new technologies aimed at drilling and formation evaluation.

    GEM Elemental Analysis tool

“Accurate reservoir and production estimates are difficult to achieve when formations are heterogeneously complex, such as in carbonate reservoirs and shale,” said Jerry Truax, Halliburton technology fellow for Petrophysics. “Elemental analysis provides valuable information for more accurate reserves estimates, better completion designs, and an overall improved understanding of the asset.”

Halliburton’s GEM Elemental Analysis Tool promises quick and precise evaluations of complex mineralogies using a combination of proven interpretation processes and integrated petrophysical analysis. The tool is a neutron-induced capture gamma ray spectroscopy logging system designed to derive elemental contributions contained within the entire measured gamma ray energy spectrum. The system can measure elemental yields that are important for mineralogical evaluations in open holes such that the user can accurately assess the reservoir and complete the well.

The GEM tool reportedly has a unique design and metallurgy compared to other wireline logging tools, which minimizes any signals from within the borehole or from the tool itself. In addition, the chemical source employed affords wider applicability and cost savings because the tool is shorter, more durable, and has simpler usage requirements.

The detector is housed in a flask with a eutectic heat sink which allows extended operation at downhole conditions. “We have run some laboratory trials that indicate that the GEM tool can operate continuously for 24 hours at bottomhole temperatures of 350°F,” Truax said.

The tool’s software also provides onsite or remote visualization of the elemental data quickly and accurately, with robust post-processing solutions. “The result is the most sensitive device on the market to accurately quantify important elements such as aluminum for shales and magnesium for carbonates,” said Truax.

More information can be found at Halliburton’s GEM website.

    GeoTap IDS

Halliburton’s GeoTap IDS is a formation testing technology that provides fluid sampling and identification on logging-while-drilling (LWD) devices. According to the company, this means of deployment represents an industry breakthrough, as previous formation fluid sampling tools have been available only via wireline. Because the GeoTap IDS sensor?which is built on the GeoTap formation pressure tester platform?is deployed via LWD, it allows for downhole capture, identification, and surface recovery of representative fluid samples while also eliminating the time and cost of wireline sampling.

“By employing the GeoTap IDS, we estimate that an operator can save a total of USD2.2 million on their formation testing operation, based on a rate of USD250,000 per day,” said Jim Wilson, principal global champion LWD/MWD for Halliburton.

    Other benefits include:

    • Reduced uncertainly in complex reservoirs
    • Improved economic performance in high-cost deepwater environments
    • Data acquisition within hours, not days, through reduced pump-out time
    • Improve geocorrelation accuracy and geosteering capabilities

“We feel that this technology is ideally suited for highly deviated wells, and we plan to prove this with our first field tests that will take place later this year in the US Gulf of Mexico,” Wilson said.

Halliburton’s tour and introduction of these technologies was designed to show its commitment to continued technology investment in spite of the current economic downturn in the industry. “Halliburton is a leading innovator, and we will continue on the path of continuous investment in the right formation evaluation technology that will reduce uncertainty and provide better real-time understanding of deeply buried, deepwater reservoirs,” said Tim Probert, Halliburton’s division president of drilling and evaluation.
